Transfer students
Transferring to the U? You’re already familiar with the realities of college life. But remember that every school has its own way of doing things. Here are some helpful strategies for you to consider as a transfer student with a disability:
Don’t assume that all colleges provide services to students with disabilities in exactly the same way. They don’t. Be prepared for some new procedures.
Plan ahead. Contact Disability Services several months in advance of the start of classes to meet with a Disability Specialist, ensure that your documentation is sufficient, arrange for services, and finalize accommodations. You want everything in place before classes begin. Also, remember that documentation that is sufficient in one setting occasionally may not be appropriate in another. Your Disability Specialist will need to have a current understanding of the impact of your condition on your learning, and that may mean you need to get updated documentation. Schedule a visit for transfer students offered by the Office of Admissions. You may know the basics of how to do college, but you’ll need to get an overview of where things are and how things are done at the U. You can request accommodations when you schedule a visit online or call 1-800-752-1000 or 612-625-0000.
