Disability Culture
Disability culture celebrates the unique experiences and common history of people with disabilities. It challenges negative social stereotypes and promotes pride among people with disabilities. Disability culture has its roots in the political activism and disability rights movement, which began in the 1960s and continues today.
On the U's Twin Cities campus, disability culture is best expressed in the Disabled Student Cultural Center (DSCC), located in 203 Coffman Union, The DSCC is a student organization that seeks to improve the campus climate for people with disabilities and to foster a sense of identity, community, and pride among U students with disabilities.
